NIKE, INC COMPANY PROFILE Nike, Inc. is the biggest producer of athletic apparel and footwear global by sales. Headquartered in One Bowerman Drive, Beaverton, USA, the company sells products through 346 retail outlets across and 343 stores outside the US with famous brands such as Nike, Converse and Umbro over 170 countries. It is employing 34,400 workers and has been being competed strongly by Adidas and Puma (Nike company website, 2010). ok For the last five years, Nike’s revenue increased steadily except 2010 ($19,014m, ), a decrease of 0.8% as compared to 2009) (ibid). By region, North America accounted for 36% of sales, followed by Western Europe (19%), Greater China (9.4%), Central and Eastern Europe (4.85%) and Japan (3.54%)†¦show more content†¦The level of competition is higher and higher because of the development of many new companies as well as Adidas and Puma (Datamonitor, 2010). For instance, Adidas has been investing a lot of money into its campaigns on internet such as campaigns on Youtube, Facebook to reach the young customers (Sportskeeda website, 2010). Another threat is the cheap products imported from China and the development of fake goods market putting pressure on the company (Datamonitor, 2010). Most counterfeit products are produced from China. These goods have exactly the same types as the products of original brands. The counterfeit Nike is made of a lower quality material in co mparison to the original product (Bizaims website, 2008). EVALUATION Despite the current recession it seems that the future of Nike will continue to develop. According to Reuter (2010), there is an increasing (11%) in orders for Nike’s brand apparel and shoes totalling $7.7 billion from 2010 through April 2011. Moreover, Nike has replaced Adidas to be the sponsor of the French soccer federation which is a good chance to increase the revenue. Henri de La Grandville (2011) said that what Nike has now is a great challenge and selling a lot of shirts is the first thing the company must do. How Should We Accept Inevitable Progression Of Growing Old...

Introduction How should we accept inevitable progression of growing old and finally death? In today’s modern society the very subject of aging is often taboo and shrouded in anxiety and shame. The same holds true in regards to the death. The Mere mention of dying tend to make most people uncomfortable therefore the subject is rarely ever talked about unless as part of a classroom or at the end someone’s life. Mitch Albom’s inspiring bestseller brings to light these trials and tribulations of the aging and dying process. Tuesdays with Morrie offers advice for positive living with the aging and dying process through anecdotes and examples from the author’s interview with his elderly and dying professor Morrie Schwartz. Morrie teaches us to face up to the real problem of aging and dying in order to remain youthful in spirits. The Aging Adult Experience There is no doubt that everyone knows about the biological, mental and physical changes that we experience as we age, which is known as aging. Aging is the process of â€Å"the process of change in the properties of a material occurring over a period, either spontaneously or through deliberate action† (â€Å"Definition of AGING,† n.d.). Evidence has proven that we age the most rapidly during the earlier years of life, as we mature from infants to sexual mature adults. Working during high school free essay sample

A Job is Part of High School Student’s Success Johan Cruijff once stated, â€Å"Every disadvantage has its advantage.† This famous quote leads to the issue of whether students should work or not work during high school, which has been a controversial hot topic in the Parent/Teacher Association. Working during high school may affect students’ school performance, yet working also provides invaluable working skills. According to the short article, â€Å"Part-Time Work Ethic: Should Teens Go For It?† by Dennis McLellan, â€Å"80% of high school students had held part-time jobs by the time they graduated† (270). Statistics show that the majority of the high school students held a position in a job during high school, and these students still graduated successfully. Although parents and teachers understand that working can interfere with schoolwork and therefore discourage students to work during high school; I believe that working during high school can help students to gain working experiences, stay on track, and improve their academic performance. Having a job can interfere with students’ school performance. According to Dennis McLellan’s article, jobs can take away students’ study time. â€Å"Students who work long hours are more likely to cut back on courses at school, taking easier classes and avoiding tougher ones† (271). Meaning that students are exhausted from work, thus less likely to catch up with school works. One of the examples that McLellan mentioned in his article is a high school student named Nathan Keethe, who constantly get B’s and works more than 20 hours each week for an exterminating service. He stated that working during high school year is a distraction. Another example is a friend of mine in high school named Jen. She worked 10 hours a week, much less than Keeth, and still struggling with her schoolwork. She was unable to manage her time wisely and balance between work and schoolwork. After failing the history test, she talked to her manager and cut down her hours to 5 hours per week. Thus, Jen had more time to study and found a tutor to help her catch up. Fortunately, she caught up before the finals. Thus, many people conclude that working in high school can easily end up undermining the education. In this case, managing and balancing between school and work is a challenge and a lesson that every student needs to learn. Working during high school has more advantages than disadvantages. Students are able to get the financial benefits from jobs. According to Katherine Cress, the author of â€Å"Why Not Ask the Students? Urban Teenagers Make the Case for Working,† students can use their income to take the pressure off their families. Teenagers often ask parents for money, but high school students are young adults who should be able to take care of themselves and should be more independent. Working can make this happen. Working students are able to contribute â€Å" †¦their own support–and thereby [contribute] to the welfare of the family as a whole . . . † (290). Cress provides several examples in her article, which includes the fact that Laronda lends her mother money; Kevin pays for his family’s groceries; and seventeen years old Carmen is already married and works to pay the household expenses. Furthermore, I had a job in high school as a tutor for flute, three hours a week and ten dollars for each lesson hour. I earned $30 per week and I was able to go shopping and watch movies without begging my mother for money. A job can take care of the basic financial issues on students. Another advantage of working during high school is that the jobs provide the basic skills and working habits that are hard to gain from school. None of the prior research showed that students could learn valuable skills and working habits in school. Cress points out a remarkable example of a working student, named James (example of him doing what?). He states that he learns the administration skills in work that he will need in his future job. He worked in a record store and he confidently claimed that he would be able to handle the entire store by his senior year because he will accumulate the working experiences such as communication skills, management skills, and stocking. These invaluable skills, that will help James to achieve his goal and â€Å"operate his own business after college† (288) includes marketing, managing, and stocking. One working skill that I learned from teaching flute is patience, and it is still useful to me. I recall the first couple times when I taught a beginner in flute. It irritated me whenever she didn’t get the correct articulation, which means a musical technique that affects the transition on the notes. Nonetheless, she was only a beginner; I noticed that I shouldn’t expect perfection from her. So I reviewed the basic skills step-by-step and played with her until she can play the entire phrase perfectly by herself. Working skill is the experience that we have to go through personally in order to build our way to success in future jobs. Last major advantage that students can benefit for working during high school is that their jobs can keep students away from troubles and laziness. The students who choose life on the streets over jobs are going home to watch television, which will develop the sense of laziness, and getting into gang activity. In Cress’s study, Reggie points out â€Å" †¦there’s kids out there—stealing cars, selling drugs, and all that† (289). In other words, the school demands very little from students, thus the only alternative is the drug and alcohol. However, a job can solve all of the problems. There are two examples from my family that can clarify the point in which working will decrease the chance of getting into trouble and the usage of drugs and alcohol. When one of my older brothers, Kevin, who went to high school, used to party every night because he said there was no homework at all, and he had nothing to do than going to parties. My parents thought a job might be a distraction for Kevin’s schoolwork, but I think if Kevin got a job in high school, then he wouldn’t go party everyday and got average grades. On the other hand, when I was a freshman in high school, I didn’t get much homework as well. So I watched television everyday, even before school. When the progress report came out, I was shocked because I had C’s in my classes. Thus, I hid the report card from my parents and started to study. I also found a job as a tutor just to keep me busy and away from the television. Gladly, not only did I maintained my grades throughout the school year, but also performed exceptionally in my job. A job can help parents to keep an eye on the students from doing poorly in school and help the students to stay away from trouble. Jobs have more benefits than harms. Many parents and teachers may argue that students who have jobs also have low academic performance. However, this is not always the case. If students avoid the excessive working hours, then students still can keep their focus on the education. It is important for student to start to work during high school to learn the foundation skills. In other words, students are able to be independent and support their family; students are able to learn the essential working skills that they will need in their future; and students are able to stay away from trouble. Therefore, the Parent/Teacher Association should encourage students to start working during their high school years.â€Æ' Works Cited Cress, Katherine. â€Å"Why Not Ask the Students? Traditional Roles of Men and Women free essay sample

The traditional family roles of men and women have certainly changed over the last few generations. The traditional family has been defined since the biblical days. It portrays men as the independent hunters and women as the dependent gatherers. However, today there is a continuing decline of the traditional family and the rise of the equal two-earner family. The traditional roles of men and women were established to enable power to head of household, which is historically known as the male.In the past, children have been raised to expect men to be brave, dominant and industrious while the women have been expected to be weak, timid and nurturing. A boy was raised to believe that his role would be that of the sustainer of wealth and the head of the family. For his education, it was very important for boys to attend school to obtain a great occupation where professional qualifications were only important for men. We will write a custom essay sample on Traditional Roles of Men and Women or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page On the other hand, a girl was raised to believe that education was not important for her, so she had to stay home and help her mother with the chores. The workplace was not the primary area of women as career advancement is viewed upon as unimportant for women. Her role was to find somebody who would marry and provide for her. Thus, she needed to focus on perfecting herself by practising household chores and learning to cook in order to satisfy her husband. In a marriage, the mans traditional roles was the worker and protector, he provided the food and home while the woman was the home maker, the cook, the cleaner and the nurturer of children. When it came to decision making, the man had the last say, where as the woman was viewed as a valueless servant of the powerful man of the household. Fortunately, as a consequence of the success of the suffragette and feminist movements, the traditional roles have been lost.Marriage is now about equality rather than power and domination on the man’s part. Now, education, politics and job opportunities have opened up for woman. Today, school is viewed as important for both girls and boys and same qualification for men and women for job opportunities. More women have joined the work force and more men have taken on household tasks. In the past, housekeeping and child care are the main functions of the woman. Now, all housework is done by both the mother and father. In addition, todays society has evolved into a mix of single parents, double income families and homosexual parents/partners. Along with that, women have adapted and gained independence. They no longer need a man to provide for the family and is capable of doing it alone. To conclude, the traditional family has become almost a myth. Today’s society is moving towards equal rights in every area of life. However, equality is still not globally accepted as some countries still maintain the outdated traditional roles for men and women.

Shakespeares comedy Twelfth Night conveys an undertone of sadness Essay Example

Shakespeares comedy Twelfth Night conveys an undertone of sadness Essay Example Shakespeares comedy Twelfth Night conveys an undertone of sadness Paper Shakespeares comedy Twelfth Night conveys an undertone of sadness Paper Essay Topic: Literature Twelfth Night The beginning of this scene is set with Orsino in his house, looking very grand yet depressed, with his servants Curio and Cesario. Orsino asks his servant Curio to bring Feste, Olivias clown to him. Curio exits. Orsino carries on with his general chatter about Olivia to Cesario. He goes on to ask if Cesario is in love. Cesario replies by describing Orsino but in a ladys form. Curio and Feste enter. Orsino orders Feste to sing the song he had sung the night before because it had made him happy. Feste then sings the song, which was about love. As soon as Feste has finished, Orsino decides that he has had enough of him and tries to get rid of him by paying him. After a short conversation, Feste takes the money and exits. Cesario tries to find out if Orsino could ever love anyone else apart from Olivia. Orsino replies by saying that no one could have such a great love for anyone as he has for Olivia. Cesario tells Orsino about his sister who died of not telling the man she loved what she felt for him. On this note, Orsino tells Cesario to go to Olivia and give her a jewel as a token of his great love for her. Cesario exits. Twelfth Night is funny to a contemporary audience because they can see that Cesario is really a woman (Viola) and that there is a love triangle between Viola-Orsino-Olivia-Cesario (Viola). This is Dramatic irony because the audience can see the love triangle. They can also observe that Orsino is besotted with Olivia and that he over expresses his love for her. Orsino also acts very effeminately by looking in mirror every 5minutes (he is also extremely vain) and by having very feminine colours all over his house. They can follow Feste s jokes well and find them funny. It is also sad to a contemporary audience because they can see Violas heart breaking over the loss of her brother and her unrequited love for Orsino. Over the loss of her brother because he had never been parted from him like that before. In loving Orsino, because she thinks that he could never love anyone apart from Olivia. In addition, she cannot reveal her identity to Orsino. Twelfth Night is funny to a pre 21st century audience because they can see the love triangle between Viola-Orsino-Olivia-Cesario (Viola) and because they know, that Cesario is a woman but played by a man. They follow Feste s jokes well and find them funny. Orsino will seem less funny to a 21st century audience because it is more common for men to act very effeminate in the 21st century. It is sad to a pre 21st century audience because they can see the heartbreak of Viola in her feelings towards Orsino and how she cannot reveal her true identity. If I were to present the play, it would be set in modern times because you can show the different costumes and be theatrical with them because people in this era do what they want with their clothes. You can express your emotions through this. The scene would be set with Orsino sitting on an aristocratic red and gold throne. I would try to make the set look like an old and classy house, with pictures and sumptuous drapes all over the set. I have chosen this because it shows how overdramatic Orsino can be. There would be red and gold all over the set because these colours are often associated with love and Valentines Day. Little details of props like a mirror and pictures of Orsino are important because they show that Orsino is vain and that he loves himself. There should be at least one servant on the stage all the time. This is to show that Orsino is very high up on the social ladder. All of these would show Orsino s character fully because of his feelings towards love. During the lines About your years my lord ~ Cesario Too old by heaven. Let the woman still take an elder than herself. ~ Orsino Shakespeare wanted this moment in the play to be intense for Cesario because of whom hes describing (Orsino). I would show this through his movements on stage. Cesario needs to be walking around thinking what to say but still needs to be quite close to Orsino. Orsino needs to be sitting very majestically on his seat until he says the line Too old by heaven. He should stand up and walk around a bit, holding himself tall. This expresses his opinion on the matter. Shakespeare puts in the line Too old by heaven to show that Orsino has his say in everything and that his opinion should count on every matter. The spotlight should be on both Cesario and Orsino at all times, the same spotlight. As they move further apart the spotlight should separate and they should have a spotlight each. This should happen because they are having a conversation. It would be different if one of the characters were giving a speech. When Cesario says About your years my lord he should say it as if he was thinking what to say, this should remind the audience that Cesario is hiding his real identity from Orsino. When Orsino says Too old by heaven, his voice should go high and shrill. Then when he carries on saying, Let still the woman take an elder than herself his voice should back to normal and talk as if he is giving Cesario some advice. During this line Truly, Sir, and pleasure will be paid for one time or another. ~ Feste Feste needs to be stood up and ready to take a bow. And after the quote he should walk backwards still in a bow. The spotlight should be on Orsino and Feste during this quote because Feste is speaking but Orsino is listening. This shows who the quote is aimed at and that theres a conversation going on between the two characters. Shakespeare wanted this moment to be quite cheeky and a male joke I would show this by the characters tone of voice. When Feste says Truly, Sir, he should say it in a very cheeky voice. But when he carries on saying and pleasure will be paid for one way or another. He should say this as though he is very masculine. And still in a very cheeky voice. During this line Thy mind is very opal. ~ Feste. Feste needs to be heading for the door before he says this line. Then when he gets to the door he needs to call out his line out. The spotlight needs to be on Feste all the time while saying this line and while he exits. Shakespeare wanted the mood at this moment to be comical yet serious and I would make this happen by the tone of Feste s voice. When Feste says, Thy mind is a very opal he needs to say it in a very low and disapproving voice to show that he thinks that Orsino changes his mind too often. His voice should also sound annoyed yet clever to show he is fast because the audience need to remember that Feste can be serious and clever even though hes the fool. During this line, She never told her love. But let concealment, like a worm in th bud, Feed on her damask cheek. She pind in thought. ~ Cesario. Cesario needs to have a sad expression on his face and look concerned about this little story. He needs to be stood up and staring into the sky and then come back down to earth when he has finished his lines. Shakespeare intended this moment to be like story time I would enhance this through the lighting. The spotlight needs to be on both Orsino and Cesario because Cesario is the storyteller and Orsino is the listener. It shows the connection between the two characters. Although there should be a brighter spotlight on Cesario. To show who is talking. Cesario needs to sound like he is quite upset about the whole story and to be quite interested about what Orsino s reply will be. During this line, I am all the daughters of my fathers house, And all the brothers too - ~ Cesario Cesario needs to be looking quite suspicious because although hes not making much sense he only just adds And all the brothers too - at the end of the quote. Cesario needs to have his back to Orsino when he says, I am all the daughters of my fathers house, And then swing round to face Orsino when he says And all the brothers too - to face his mistake. The spotlight still needs to be on both Orsino and Cesario. However, the spotlights need to be dull to show the mood of the moment is sad. This is what Shakespeare intended. Cesario needs to be speaking his line I am all the daughters of my fathers house, with sadness in his voice and a dull expression on his face. When he says his line And all the brothers too - he needs to say it like it is obvious to him. During this line, Give her this jewel: say My love can give no place, bide no delay. ~ Orsino Shakespeare intended this moment to be the definite end of the scene I would enhance this by the characters actions during this moment. Orsino needs to be pulling a ring off his finger to give to Cesario. Cesario needs to respond by putting his hand out to take the ring to Olivia. Orsino needs to be rushing to do this act and to get Cesario out of the door to see Olivia. After this line, Orsino should stand up from his seat, and then go to the door with Cesario and see that he leaves the grounds towards Olivias house. The spotlight needs to be on both Orsino and Cesario as they move throughout this quote. Then as Cesario leaves the spotlight should break. There should not be a spotlight on Cesario at this point. Only one on Orsino. Orsino s voice should sound as though this errand was very urgent and that it should be done right away. This is because after hearing the story he thinks that he might come to an end like Cesarios sister. Dramatic Irony is used in this play because this is what makes it entertaining. You know things that the characters do not. It makes you feel that you are keeping the secret from the characters, so you want people to know but you cannot tell them. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony, many metaphors and similes to make Twelfth Night a comedy which people from all eras of time will enjoy.

Social Marketing Essay

Social Marketing Essay Social Marketing Essay Christopher Place Employment Christopher Place Employment Academy (CPEA) is an intensive residential program which offers training and education, in addition to spiritual, emotional and addiction rehabilitation to former homeless men (Catholic Charities, 2009). Basically, the program entails a program of transition which moves the men from being homeless to having a permanent abode as well as equipping them with necessary knowledge to gain meaningful employment which enables them to live a drugs-free life. In light of the current economic crisis and given that a quarter of Baltimore’s population is currently living in poverty; the program is experiencing increasing demand. CP’s ODBEC assists thousands of people annually from unemployment, hunger and homelessness. Also, the program helps formerly homeless men get back into the mainstay population by engaging them in training workshops and classes that aid the transition phase. Additional services such as mental health counseling, case management, re ferrals to get community based benefits, workshops to impart skills in job hunting and retaining. In the last year alone, ODBEC helped 343 homeless people get employment and helped 86 homeless men change and gain stable housing, self-sufficiency and employment via CP’s Employment academy (Catholic Charities, 2009). 688 formerly homeless people graduated from the academy’s Work 4 Success program. CP helps needy people meet their most critical needs, for instance serving meals and giving stable to released inmates. Its transition programs helps released offenders to rebuild their lives through a job readiness program, imparts confidence required for interviews, offers resume writing skills and job placement. Successful graduates of the program are provided with other amenities such as vehicle ownership programs, volunteer/donor sponsored programs and savings programs. They also help in supporting new participants in the program. To continue its good work, CP requires financial support. Target Population Due to the program’s success in rebuilding homeless people’s lives, the same has been proposed for released inmates to help them transition back into the community. Most of the inmates do not have homes, food and employment opportunities once they are released. They are also likely to start using drug substances out of frustration. Preliminary Ideas and Strategies The program intends to introduce a substance abuse recovery support program to help in the rehabilitation of the inmates. Substance programs increase the person’s self-efficacy and decision making capabilities (Helen Patti, 2001). Qualified substance abuse counselors who will be hired to work one on one with the inmates in order to impart their knowledge and wisdom. Research has indicated that the personal attention which characterizes the one on one approach leads to more success in counseling interventions (Moll et al., 2009). The counselors will be useful in adding to the rehabilitation of the inmates because one of the reasons why people keep coming back is substance abuse related relapse. Evaluation Evaluation of the program will involve assessment after every two weeks for both the counselors and the inmates. Counselor Competency will be informally addressed through observation and formally carried out through reviews. Self reporting will be applied and encouraged as a performance review mechanism (Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme, 2003). There will be a monthly assessment to check whether the substance counselors match with the inmates. Success indicators for evaluation plan will include the number of inmates successfully rehabilitated monthly as well as impacts of early re-intervention and sustained performance on the participants. This will involve an assessment of cases of relapse observed every month. The program will also report the prevalence of depression in the next three months after the interventions in order to measure success. Key Points for Social Marketing Strategic Approach The program aims to foster sustained behavior as well as quality life for released inmates encountering social problems upon their release (Kotler, Roberto, Lee, 2002). The promotion of social objectives such as clean and safe housing, provision of meals, drugs-free living and job skills will be achieved through application of principles of market analysis and planning, as well as addressing the problems that are encountered in social change. The program will especially make use of conferences and peer reviewed publications to articulate its principles.

Managing people in the work environment 2 - Essay Example 2007 for the introduction of a Single Equality Act for Great Britain with main focus of achieving a harmonious set of guidelines that can define laws of equality such as disability discrimination and harmonisation of legal definitions of disability discrimination and indirect discrimination. Other objectives of the law review include equal pay and multiple discrimination cases, individual remedies, public sector duties, procurement, and positive action (Malik, 2007). Equality Act 2010 is included in the fifth generation of the equality legislation in Britain which is a product of the struggles of different groups and ideologies, thus, its establishment is based on the need of the people. The Act explored 3 factors in general namely the rights of all human beings, the equal protection from discrimination, and the obligation for full effect of implementation of the provisions (Hepple, 2010).
