Shakespeares comedy Twelfth Night conveys an undertone of sadness Essay Example

Shakespeares comedy Twelfth Night conveys an undertone of sadness Essay Example Shakespeares comedy Twelfth Night conveys an undertone of sadness Paper Shakespeares comedy Twelfth Night conveys an undertone of sadness Paper Essay Topic: Literature Twelfth Night The beginning of this scene is set with Orsino in his house, looking very grand yet depressed, with his servants Curio and Cesario. Orsino asks his servant Curio to bring Feste, Olivias clown to him. Curio exits. Orsino carries on with his general chatter about Olivia to Cesario. He goes on to ask if Cesario is in love. Cesario replies by describing Orsino but in a ladys form. Curio and Feste enter. Orsino orders Feste to sing the song he had sung the night before because it had made him happy. Feste then sings the song, which was about love. As soon as Feste has finished, Orsino decides that he has had enough of him and tries to get rid of him by paying him. After a short conversation, Feste takes the money and exits. Cesario tries to find out if Orsino could ever love anyone else apart from Olivia. Orsino replies by saying that no one could have such a great love for anyone as he has for Olivia. Cesario tells Orsino about his sister who died of not telling the man she loved what she felt for him. On this note, Orsino tells Cesario to go to Olivia and give her a jewel as a token of his great love for her. Cesario exits. Twelfth Night is funny to a contemporary audience because they can see that Cesario is really a woman (Viola) and that there is a love triangle between Viola-Orsino-Olivia-Cesario (Viola). This is Dramatic irony because the audience can see the love triangle. They can also observe that Orsino is besotted with Olivia and that he over expresses his love for her. Orsino also acts very effeminately by looking in mirror every 5minutes (he is also extremely vain) and by having very feminine colours all over his house. They can follow Feste s jokes well and find them funny. It is also sad to a contemporary audience because they can see Violas heart breaking over the loss of her brother and her unrequited love for Orsino. Over the loss of her brother because he had never been parted from him like that before. In loving Orsino, because she thinks that he could never love anyone apart from Olivia. In addition, she cannot reveal her identity to Orsino. Twelfth Night is funny to a pre 21st century audience because they can see the love triangle between Viola-Orsino-Olivia-Cesario (Viola) and because they know, that Cesario is a woman but played by a man. They follow Feste s jokes well and find them funny. Orsino will seem less funny to a 21st century audience because it is more common for men to act very effeminate in the 21st century. It is sad to a pre 21st century audience because they can see the heartbreak of Viola in her feelings towards Orsino and how she cannot reveal her true identity. If I were to present the play, it would be set in modern times because you can show the different costumes and be theatrical with them because people in this era do what they want with their clothes. You can express your emotions through this. The scene would be set with Orsino sitting on an aristocratic red and gold throne. I would try to make the set look like an old and classy house, with pictures and sumptuous drapes all over the set. I have chosen this because it shows how overdramatic Orsino can be. There would be red and gold all over the set because these colours are often associated with love and Valentines Day. Little details of props like a mirror and pictures of Orsino are important because they show that Orsino is vain and that he loves himself. There should be at least one servant on the stage all the time. This is to show that Orsino is very high up on the social ladder. All of these would show Orsino s character fully because of his feelings towards love. During the lines About your years my lord ~ Cesario Too old by heaven. Let the woman still take an elder than herself. ~ Orsino Shakespeare wanted this moment in the play to be intense for Cesario because of whom hes describing (Orsino). I would show this through his movements on stage. Cesario needs to be walking around thinking what to say but still needs to be quite close to Orsino. Orsino needs to be sitting very majestically on his seat until he says the line Too old by heaven. He should stand up and walk around a bit, holding himself tall. This expresses his opinion on the matter. Shakespeare puts in the line Too old by heaven to show that Orsino has his say in everything and that his opinion should count on every matter. The spotlight should be on both Cesario and Orsino at all times, the same spotlight. As they move further apart the spotlight should separate and they should have a spotlight each. This should happen because they are having a conversation. It would be different if one of the characters were giving a speech. When Cesario says About your years my lord he should say it as if he was thinking what to say, this should remind the audience that Cesario is hiding his real identity from Orsino. When Orsino says Too old by heaven, his voice should go high and shrill. Then when he carries on saying, Let still the woman take an elder than herself his voice should back to normal and talk as if he is giving Cesario some advice. During this line Truly, Sir, and pleasure will be paid for one time or another. ~ Feste Feste needs to be stood up and ready to take a bow. And after the quote he should walk backwards still in a bow. The spotlight should be on Orsino and Feste during this quote because Feste is speaking but Orsino is listening. This shows who the quote is aimed at and that theres a conversation going on between the two characters. Shakespeare wanted this moment to be quite cheeky and a male joke I would show this by the characters tone of voice. When Feste says Truly, Sir, he should say it in a very cheeky voice. But when he carries on saying and pleasure will be paid for one way or another. He should say this as though he is very masculine. And still in a very cheeky voice. During this line Thy mind is very opal. ~ Feste. Feste needs to be heading for the door before he says this line. Then when he gets to the door he needs to call out his line out. The spotlight needs to be on Feste all the time while saying this line and while he exits. Shakespeare wanted the mood at this moment to be comical yet serious and I would make this happen by the tone of Feste s voice. When Feste says, Thy mind is a very opal he needs to say it in a very low and disapproving voice to show that he thinks that Orsino changes his mind too often. His voice should also sound annoyed yet clever to show he is fast because the audience need to remember that Feste can be serious and clever even though hes the fool. During this line, She never told her love. But let concealment, like a worm in th bud, Feed on her damask cheek. She pind in thought. ~ Cesario. Cesario needs to have a sad expression on his face and look concerned about this little story. He needs to be stood up and staring into the sky and then come back down to earth when he has finished his lines. Shakespeare intended this moment to be like story time I would enhance this through the lighting. The spotlight needs to be on both Orsino and Cesario because Cesario is the storyteller and Orsino is the listener. It shows the connection between the two characters. Although there should be a brighter spotlight on Cesario. To show who is talking. Cesario needs to sound like he is quite upset about the whole story and to be quite interested about what Orsino s reply will be. During this line, I am all the daughters of my fathers house, And all the brothers too - ~ Cesario Cesario needs to be looking quite suspicious because although hes not making much sense he only just adds And all the brothers too - at the end of the quote. Cesario needs to have his back to Orsino when he says, I am all the daughters of my fathers house, And then swing round to face Orsino when he says And all the brothers too - to face his mistake. The spotlight still needs to be on both Orsino and Cesario. However, the spotlights need to be dull to show the mood of the moment is sad. This is what Shakespeare intended. Cesario needs to be speaking his line I am all the daughters of my fathers house, with sadness in his voice and a dull expression on his face. When he says his line And all the brothers too - he needs to say it like it is obvious to him. During this line, Give her this jewel: say My love can give no place, bide no delay. ~ Orsino Shakespeare intended this moment to be the definite end of the scene I would enhance this by the characters actions during this moment. Orsino needs to be pulling a ring off his finger to give to Cesario. Cesario needs to respond by putting his hand out to take the ring to Olivia. Orsino needs to be rushing to do this act and to get Cesario out of the door to see Olivia. After this line, Orsino should stand up from his seat, and then go to the door with Cesario and see that he leaves the grounds towards Olivias house. The spotlight needs to be on both Orsino and Cesario as they move throughout this quote. Then as Cesario leaves the spotlight should break. There should not be a spotlight on Cesario at this point. Only one on Orsino. Orsino s voice should sound as though this errand was very urgent and that it should be done right away. This is because after hearing the story he thinks that he might come to an end like Cesarios sister. Dramatic Irony is used in this play because this is what makes it entertaining. You know things that the characters do not. It makes you feel that you are keeping the secret from the characters, so you want people to know but you cannot tell them. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony, many metaphors and similes to make Twelfth Night a comedy which people from all eras of time will enjoy.

Social Marketing Essay

Social Marketing Essay Social Marketing Essay Christopher Place Employment Christopher Place Employment Academy (CPEA) is an intensive residential program which offers training and education, in addition to spiritual, emotional and addiction rehabilitation to former homeless men (Catholic Charities, 2009). Basically, the program entails a program of transition which moves the men from being homeless to having a permanent abode as well as equipping them with necessary knowledge to gain meaningful employment which enables them to live a drugs-free life. In light of the current economic crisis and given that a quarter of Baltimore’s population is currently living in poverty; the program is experiencing increasing demand. CP’s ODBEC assists thousands of people annually from unemployment, hunger and homelessness. Also, the program helps formerly homeless men get back into the mainstay population by engaging them in training workshops and classes that aid the transition phase. Additional services such as mental health counseling, case management, re ferrals to get community based benefits, workshops to impart skills in job hunting and retaining. In the last year alone, ODBEC helped 343 homeless people get employment and helped 86 homeless men change and gain stable housing, self-sufficiency and employment via CP’s Employment academy (Catholic Charities, 2009). 688 formerly homeless people graduated from the academy’s Work 4 Success program. CP helps needy people meet their most critical needs, for instance serving meals and giving stable to released inmates. Its transition programs helps released offenders to rebuild their lives through a job readiness program, imparts confidence required for interviews, offers resume writing skills and job placement. Successful graduates of the program are provided with other amenities such as vehicle ownership programs, volunteer/donor sponsored programs and savings programs. They also help in supporting new participants in the program. To continue its good work, CP requires financial support. Target Population Due to the program’s success in rebuilding homeless people’s lives, the same has been proposed for released inmates to help them transition back into the community. Most of the inmates do not have homes, food and employment opportunities once they are released. They are also likely to start using drug substances out of frustration. Preliminary Ideas and Strategies The program intends to introduce a substance abuse recovery support program to help in the rehabilitation of the inmates. Substance programs increase the person’s self-efficacy and decision making capabilities (Helen Patti, 2001). Qualified substance abuse counselors who will be hired to work one on one with the inmates in order to impart their knowledge and wisdom. Research has indicated that the personal attention which characterizes the one on one approach leads to more success in counseling interventions (Moll et al., 2009). The counselors will be useful in adding to the rehabilitation of the inmates because one of the reasons why people keep coming back is substance abuse related relapse. Evaluation Evaluation of the program will involve assessment after every two weeks for both the counselors and the inmates. Counselor Competency will be informally addressed through observation and formally carried out through reviews. Self reporting will be applied and encouraged as a performance review mechanism (Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme, 2003). There will be a monthly assessment to check whether the substance counselors match with the inmates. Success indicators for evaluation plan will include the number of inmates successfully rehabilitated monthly as well as impacts of early re-intervention and sustained performance on the participants. This will involve an assessment of cases of relapse observed every month. The program will also report the prevalence of depression in the next three months after the interventions in order to measure success. Key Points for Social Marketing Strategic Approach The program aims to foster sustained behavior as well as quality life for released inmates encountering social problems upon their release (Kotler, Roberto, Lee, 2002). The promotion of social objectives such as clean and safe housing, provision of meals, drugs-free living and job skills will be achieved through application of principles of market analysis and planning, as well as addressing the problems that are encountered in social change. The program will especially make use of conferences and peer reviewed publications to articulate its principles.

Managing people in the work environment 2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Managing people in the work environment 2 - Essay Example 2007 for the introduction of a Single Equality Act for Great Britain with main focus of achieving a harmonious set of guidelines that can define laws of equality such as disability discrimination and harmonisation of legal definitions of disability discrimination and indirect discrimination. Other objectives of the law review include equal pay and multiple discrimination cases, individual remedies, public sector duties, procurement, and positive action (Malik, 2007). Equality Act 2010 is included in the fifth generation of the equality legislation in Britain which is a product of the struggles of different groups and ideologies, thus, its establishment is based on the need of the people. The establishment of the Act is a product of generations’ need for a single unified law on equality. The main purpose of Equality Act 2010 then is ‘harmonisation, simplification and modernisation of equality law. Included in the main strengths of the legislation are elimination of discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other prohibited conduct; advancement of equality in opportunities regardless of the relevance of an applicant to the job or not; and the encouragement of good relationship within a group or institution (Hepple, 2010). The Equality Act 2010 covers employment guidelines to ensure the rights of both the employer and the employees. It includes guidelines for recruitment; working hours, flexible working and time off; pay and benefits; career development such as training, promotion and transfer; managing workers; dismissal, redundancy, retirement and after a worker has left; equality policies, training, and monitoring; responsibility in the company; disability provisions, etc. (Williamson, n.p.). The Act explored 3 factors in general namely the rights of all human beings, the equal protection from discrimination, and the obligation for full effect of implementation of the provisions (Hepple, 2010). There are different examples of cases related to

Piaget's theory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Piaget's theory - Essay Example ntelligence was active; and that children are not passive recipients of information, rather that they actively construct and reconstruct their knowledge of the world. Cognitive disequilibrium and the child’s action and interaction with the physical environment fuel the development of the cognitive system towards more advanced psychological structures (Fisher & Lerner, 2004). This paper will evaluate Piaget’s theory of the four stages of cognitive evolution in child development. Further, similarities and differences will be identified between Erikson’s theory and Piaget’s theory of child development, with respect to the development of identity. According to Piaget’s theory, the development of intelligence and cognitive functioning in children progresses through a series of four stages based on age and concurrent biological changes and maturation. This leads to the child demonstrating a higher level of functioning at each successive stage, as compared to the previous stage (Videbeck, 2007). The stages of development are not universal, since cultural differences exist. However, the mechanisms that underlie cognitive development are considered to be universal (Pressley & McCormick, 2007). 1. The sensorimotor stage: This extends from birth to two years. The child develops a sense of self, differentiated from the environment, and develops the concept of object permanence. That is, a perception of the existence of tangible objects even when they are out of sight, that they do 3. The concrete operations stage: Between six to twelve years the child begins to apply logic to thinking, understands spatiality and reversibility, is increasingly social and able to apply rules; however, thinking is still concrete. 4. The formal operations stage: From twelve to fifteen years and beyond, the child learns to think and reason in abstract terms. Further, there is development of logical thinking and reasoning, and the achievement of cognitive maturity in the child

An Open Letter to Black Parents Essay Example for Free

An Open Letter to Black Parents Essay In renowned sports figure, Arthur Ashe’s, â€Å"An Open Letter to Black Parents: Send Your Children to Libraries,† he talks about the fact that a college education is more important than the perks of becoming a professional athlete. While attending UCLA, Ashe came to the conclusion that African Americans were more caught up in the hype of one day becoming a professional athlete, rather than obtaining a lasting college education/diploma. Ashe believes that African Americans should â€Å"re-write† their persona into one of profoundness and professionalism. Arthur Ashe states that the role models of the African American society are primarily composed of athletes. Therefore, the young children in that society tend to model themselves after those people. Instead, Ashe wants to have those role models spread a message that a college education is far more important than being a professional athlete. For example, Ashe has stated many times to high school students that, â€Å"For every hour you spend on the athletic field, spend two in the library.† These words are a very powerful message, especially to young adults still searching for their call in this world. In conclusion, although Arthur Ashe may be recognized as one of the greatest tennis players of his generation, his college diploma from UCLA is his proudest moment in life.   In Richard Rodriguez’s â€Å"Complexion† he talks about the racism he experienced as a child. Rodriguez places a lot of emphasis on rhetorical devices throughout his essay. The rhetorical devices that Rodriguez primarily uses is, description and symbolism. Through using these two rhetorical devices, Rodriguez is able to relate to the reader in a more personal level, in my opinion. Through description, Rodriguez is able to elaborate on certain details. Through using symbolism, he expresses the  emotions and feelings that he feels. Richard Rodriguez writes this essay in order to inform people of the racism that he has experienced. Since Rodriguez was the one experiencing the racism, his essay coincides nicely with the rhetorical devices that he chose. Rodriguez is of the Mexican culture and he recalls times when he was a kid where he was being discriminated. Rodriguez writes that as a young child he was insulted and name called for being of the Mexican culture. He writes how he would never retaliate with another insult back because he would be so embarrassed. The reason as to why Rodriguez was being discriminated was because of his â€Å"complexion.† Through reading this story, it is just another example of how ignorant people are. There are many stories about how people have been discriminated against just due to the fact that they are from a different culture. Richard Rodriguez did the right thing in not retaliating or doing something stupid, in order to not suffer any consequences. Summary: â€Å"Don’t let Stereotypes Warp Your Judgments† In Robert Heilbroner’s, â€Å"Don’t let Stereotypes Warp Your Judgments,† he talks about the affects of stereotyping. Heilbroner discusses that stereotyping is evident in just about everywhere we are. The affects that stereotyping has on a person, as stated by Heilbroner, is it makes us lazy thinkers, and is harmful to those whom we are stereotyping. Heilbroner’s suggests that people who stereotype, do it â€Å"because it helps make sense out of a highly confusing world† (Heilbroner 373). This makes sense because we try to come up with answers to things we do not understand. Another theory that Heilbroner suggests as to why people stereotype, is because we are raised with a certain mindset about people. In his story Heilbroner gives the reader three ways to get rid of stereotyping. His first suggestion is to â€Å"become aware of the standardized pictures in our heads, in other people’s heads, in the world around us† (Heilbroner 374). The second suggestion is that â€Å"we can become suspicious of all judgments that we allow exceptions to prove† (Heilbroner 374). And lastly Heilbroner  suggests that â€Å"we can learn to be chary of generalizations of people† (Heilbroner 375). After reading Robert Heilbroner’s essay, I became more aware to the large amounts of stereotyping that occurs in today’s society. Although I was already aware, stereotyping not only has a negative effect on the person stereotyping, but on the person that is being stereotyped. Through stereotyping, one opens up a path that encourages horrible things such as racism and ignorance.

Creative writing about George and Lennie Essay

Stumbling through the wet grass the two came frantically running, looking behind them at every few strides, breathing hard, disturbing the green grass and disrupting the harmony of the birds sitting in trees chirping and whistling the final songs of the day, while dogs barked and people shouted far behind them. A voice could be heard shouting above the crowd â€Å"They’re headed for the fields, com’on! † George grumbled, breathing frantically â€Å"Damnit!†¦ com’on you crazy bastard, they near got us! † â€Å"I’m trying George, I swear but I’s tired† Lennie wheezed. The two were passing fields, when they came to an irrigation ditch, George thought about it and he pulled lennie into the ditch with him. â€Å"Get your head down! † George shouted but lennie didn’t do a thing, George annoyed, shoved him under the murky water, they could hear the shouts getting closer and the dogs growling. A man said â€Å"Where the hell did they get to? † another close to him said â€Å"The dog’s ave lost the scent they musta went thru that ditch and off into the woods, no way we could get them now† â€Å"Damn†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ ok everyone back to the town for a head count then we can all go home, its getting late† With these words saw George give a sigh of relief as he gently surfaced bringing lennie with him, George taking his hat began to wring out the water, lennie copying his movements did the same, George set his crease and made his way quietly up the bank of the ditch, peering over the edge he watched torch light and man slowly disappear toward weed under the setting sun, he turned back to lennie, â€Å"Now why the hell did you touch that gals dress? Com’on you better have a good excuse or I’ll clobber ya! † Lennie was whimpering like a fearful puppy â€Å"Honest George I dint mean no wrong, I jus wanted to feel her dress† George yelled â€Å"why? Lennie? Hmm? What so good about that dress? † lennie cowered in his jacket his shoulders covering his cheeks â€Å"It was so purty George, it was red colored and soft as a rabbit, you know how I likes rabbits George† Seeing the glow in his face when he said it made George calm down, he remember who lennie was, he settled down do a smile â€Å"Ya big lummox, one day your gonna get us some real trouble, but you’re my responsibility so we gotta stick close† lennie returned a half hearted grin still slightly frigtenened â€Å"Ok George† George got up to look around once more, he spotted an old barn not far from the ditch they were in. â€Å"Right com’on now we get us some shut-eye then try and get us some work, some place† Lennie’s face lit up remembering what this all lead up to â€Å"An I get to tend the rabbits George! Huh? Huh? † â€Å"Yeah, yeah but we gotta get us a stake first† George replied George and lennie had settled down in the old barn, its walls were white with paint peeling, the roof was held up by 3 beams across the top and toward the ground, the winds outside made the barn creak eerily and lennie was having trouble sleeping, the ground was scattered with straw and the only thing in the barn was some sacks, tools and a work bench, it was less a barn than a shed. â€Å"George? George you asleep † â€Å"What? † â€Å"George cant you do somethin’ about the wind? † â€Å"No, now go to sleep, have to wake up early tomorra'† George said still half asleep â€Å"Sorry George† lennie said, eventually the morning came. â€Å"lennie! Lennie! Wake up! Com’on we gonna miss the damn bus! † â€Å"ok George, ok† lennie said as he packed his bindle and sorted himself, and hurried off with George They had gotten to the stop just in time, they paid their fare, and were on their way to get some work at.
